The world lost one of its most beloved conservationists and TV presenters in 2006 after Steve Irwin, iconic star of The Crocodile Hunter, was tragically killed by a stingray.
But his legacy lives on, thanks both to fans who grew up watching his wildlife series and to his family, who continued important conservation work at the Australian Zoo, working to protect local wildlife.
And now every year the legend celebrates its own holiday: Steve Irwin Day, which takes place every November 15th.
The day is described as “an international and annual event to celebrate the extraordinary life of the one and only Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.” It includes a day of events at the Australia Zoo honoring Steve’s life and legacy, and fundraising for Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Warriors conservation and preservation work.
In honor of this special occasion, both of Steve’s children took the opportunity to share on social media a touching tribute to their late «Wilderness Warrior» father.
Robert Irwin, Steve’s 18-year-old son who was known for his resemblance to his famous father, shared a retro photo on Instagram of him as a toddler holding a baby alligator alongside his father.
Robert’s sister Bindi, who followed in her father’s footsteps to become one of the world’s most famous conservationists and animal heroes, also paid tribute.
In addition to continuing her father’s legacy of doing important work for animals around the world, Bindi is also involved in raising her young daughter, Grace.
She said that she is raising her daughter to have an appreciation and love for animals and nature, and young Grace is already taking after her grandfather.
“I wish that Dad could hug my beautiful girl… I hold on to the thought that he’s her guardian angel now, watching over the most special part of my life, Grace.”
And the younger Irwin, it seems, is already following in the footsteps of her family. Grace knows how to handle animals. Terri Irwin, Bindi’s mom and Steve’s widow, says animals “gravitate” to her granddaughter when they’re at the Australia Zoo.
We all miss the late great Steve Irwin, but it’s clear that his legacy lives on, and it’s also clear that he made a big impression on his kids.
