Pregnant dog adopted from shelter gives birth on her way home

It’s always an exciting day when a shelter dog is finally adopted. And sometimes, these dogs find their forever homes at just the right time.

Such was with a pregnant rescue dog who gave birth to puppies on her way home from a shelter.

In 2019, things weren’t going well for Lizzie, a terrier with a broken leg and pregnant puppies. Worse, she was reportedly in a high-homicide-rate asylum in Georgia and was in serious danger of euthanasia.

But luckily, Rebecca Lynch, president of the Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida, intervened just in time.

Rebecca was on vacation in Georgia with her husband. They decided to stay at a shelter to adopt a dog, knowing that there are often many deaths in local rural shelters.

Specifically, he wanted to «save the neediest dog» they had; «I had room in my car and I wanted to help,» she told.

That “neediest dog” was Lizzy. Rebecca decided to take the poor dog home, making a cozy space in her car for their ride back to Florida.

At first, the little dog was scared and nervous, but she soon got used to her new owner. In the middle of their trip, something incredible happened: Lizzie began to give birth.

Lizzie gave birth to healthy puppies. She gave birth to three in the car, then another when they stopped at the vet, and two more on the rest of their car ride home.

It was as if Lizzy was waiting until she was in safe, good hands before giving birth to her puppies.

“All of her pups went to amazing homes when they were ready – they’re healthy, loved and spoiled rotten,” Rebecca reported a year later, according to a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, Lizzy has settled in well to her new home, and hasn’t let her traumatic past keep her from becoming a happy, loving dog.

A shelter dog’s «freedom ride» is always a special moment, but for Lizzy and Rebecca, it was a truly unforgettable trip!
